Digital access for all: Coventry shows Government what's working

The programme helps local people get online, access opportunities and improve their lives.

The visit highlighted how collaboration between the Council, businesses, the voluntary sector, health and education partners is tackling digital inclusion across the city. A key part of the day was the Strategic Policy Roundtable entitled Digital Inclusion as Essential Infrastructure'. This explored how digital inclusion could be recognised and funded as a basic necessity, rather than through short-term projects?

DCMS representatives visited Friargate One, the Central England Law Centre and The House Project, which supports young people leaving care to build independent, connected lives. The visit concluded at the Council House cells, where representatives joined technicians to repair donated devices and see first-hand how technology is being refurbished to support local people.

Paul Ward, Director of Digital Services, said: "The visit highlighted the fantastic work being delivered by the Central England Law Centre and our community partners, as well as the real difference it is making to local people. It also demonstrated the strength of our partnership with Virgin Media O2 and what can be achieved when organisations come together around a shared goal."

Our ambition is simple - everyone should have access to the digital technology, skills and connectivity they need to participate fully in modern life. In an increasingly digital world, that access is becoming as fundamental as any other essential service."
