Corcoran student featured in San Antonio Observer

A lifelong East Side resident and graduate of the San Antonio ISD, Deziree Guerra is turning her roots into research as she pursues a master's degree in art history while highlighting San Antonio's cultural identity.

Guerra, a 2019 graduate of Sam Houston High School, was deeply involved in campus life, serving as student council president, National Honor Society president, cheer captain, and soccer co-captain. She also attended Carroll and Martin Luther King academies and became known as a vocal advocate for her classmates throughout her years in SAISD schools.

Though she loved her hometown, Guerra knew early she would need to leave San Antonio to pursue her goals. She earned her undergraduate degree in political science from the University of San Diego, where an elective art history course reshaped her academic path.

After graduating in 2024, Guerra enrolled in the art history master's program at The George Washington University, where she is set to graduate in May 2026. Recently, she presented original research on San Antonio's lowriding culture as an art form at the GWU/American University Graduate Art History Symposium near the White House.

Her work challenges the field's traditional focus on Los Angeles by asserting San Antonio's vibrant lowriding culture deserves academic recognition. Guerra hopes to pursue a career in art and museum education and ultimately return home to uplift new voices.
