City Attorney Wes Duncan Announces Domestic Battery, First Offense Conviction

The Sparks City Attorney's Office has announced that its prosecutor secured a conviction for Gordon Rendon, convicted of one count of Domestic Battery, first offense, stemming from an incident that occurred on September 6, 2024.

On September 6th, 2024, Sparks Fire Department contacted Dispatch to advise of a family disturbance at a local restaurant in Sparks, NV. The victim told Sparks Fire she had just been assaulted by her husband and wanted to make a report to the Police. The victim explained she had been in a dating relationship with Gordon RENDON for approximately one year. Tonight, while driving back home from a concert, RENDON became upset with her because he believed that she had re-downloaded her social media accounts. The victim said RENDON accused her of talking to other people on her social media accounts. She told officers she was driving RENDON's truck and RENDON was in the front passenger seat. The victim stated RENDON grabbed her cell phone from her hands and began to go through her phone. When she attempted to get her phone back, RENDON became physically aggressive with her. The victim recalled being struck by RENDON, but could not remember if RENDON used an object to strike her or his fist.

The victim said that after being struck in the face, she immediately felt pain. She said RENDON's actions scared her because RENDON is much larger than her and he was "drunk" and "high on cocaine." She knew she was not too far from the Sparks Police Station, so she made a U-turn on Sparks Boulevard at O'Callaghan Drive and drove southbound on Sparks Boulevard. The victim said she missed the turn onto East Prater Way and continued to drive southbound on Sparks Boulevard. She stated that while driving southbound on Sparks Boulevard, approaching the intersection of East Lincoln Way, she saw the Sparks Fire Truck at a local restaurant. She said she continued southbound on Sparks Boulevard and made a U-turn at the next intersection (I-80 Westbound on-ramp). After making a U-turn and continuing northbound on Sparks Boulevard, the victim said RENDON got out of the vehicle and told her that she could be arrested for Grand Theft Auto. She told the officer she drove away from RENDON and contacted the Sparks Firefighters.

The victim later told the officer this was the second time RENDON had hit her in her face and approximately the fifth or sixth time RENDON had battered her.

The victim expressed concern for her safety since she lives alone. She was given a courtesy ride to her sister's house. Law enforcement provided the victim with a Domestic Violence Pamphlet, but she refused to complete a Danger Assessment form.

While speaking with the victim, it appeared she was extremely scared. Whenever other vehicles pulled into the parking lot, she moved closer to the officer. Throughout the interview, she frequently began to cry and was visibly shaking. The victim appeared to be continuously looking around as if she was expecting to see RENDON.
Furthermore, the victim was asked why she contacted Sparks Fire at the local restaurant instead of driving to the Sparks Police station, which was 0.8 miles away. She explained that she was in fear for her life and needed help as quickly as possible, so when she saw the Sparks Fire truck, she knew it was quicker than going to the Sparks Police Station.
The following are the injuries that were observed on the victim: a golf ball-sized lump on the right side of her face, underneath her right eye, near her cheekbone, and a swollen right eye. There was also a small bruise above the upper left eyelid, which appeared to be yellow in color, and a medium-sized bruise on her left arm near her triceps that had a yellowish/greenish tint, indicating the injury was from a previous incident. The victim specifically confirmed that this bruise was not from tonight's incident and was from RENDON grabbing her.

While the officer spoke with the victim, she received multiple phone calls from a number she did not recognize. She believed it may have been RENDON. I called the phone number, and a female voice answered. The female identified herself as a good friend of RENDON but had not heard from him since this morning, so she was calling the victim to ask whether she knew where he was. Later, law enforcement contacted the female in person and learned that she had not been truthful with the officer. She stated that she received a phone call from RENDON telling her that he and the victim were coming home from the concert and had gotten into an argument. The female was adamant that she did not know RENDON's current location.

Law enforcement attempted to contact RENDON both in person and by phone. RENDON answered the phone call but then immediately hung up. A declaration in support of the criminal complaint and warrant of arrest for the charge of Domestic Battery, first offense, was then submitted to the Sparks Municipal Court. A Warrant of Arrest was issued on September 17, 2024, and RENDON was ultimately arrested on October 8, 2025, on the warrant.

On April 29, 2026, a Senior Assistant City Attorney represented the City of Sparks and secured a conviction for Domestic Battery, first offense, against the Defendant.

"The Sparks City Attorney's Office is committed to protecting victims of domestic violence," said Sparks City Attorney Wes Duncan. "Intimidation and victimization will not be tolerated, and my office will use all its resources to prosecute and deter this behavior in our community."

As a result of the conviction, a Sparks Municipal Court Judge rendered the following sentence:
Mr. RENDON will serve the maximum term of 90 days in the Washoe County Jail suspended not to exceed one year, on the conditions that he spend 2 active days in jail, complete 48 hours of community service, pay a $200 fine plus administrative assessments, pay a $35 domestic violence fee, complete 26 weeks of domestic violence classes, have no contact with the victim, and that he obey all laws. Defendant was also ordered to surrender all firearms in his/her possession.
