Missouri Corn, Missouri FFA Help Prepare Next Generation of Agriculture Advocates

Posted on: Jun 25, 2026

Thirty high school seniors from across the state completed the 12th annual Helping Youth Prepare for Excellence (HYPE) FFA Academy June 23-25 in Jefferson City. Sponsored by the Missouri Corn Merchandising Council (MCMC), the three-day leadership academy equips high school seniors with the communication and advocacy skills needed to engage in conversations about agriculture and the issues facing Missouri farmers.

"When it comes to decisions impacting agriculture, every voice matters," said MCMC Chairman Patrick Seyer of Oran. "Many of these FFA members and their peers will be future leaders in our industry. HYPE helps prepare them to confidently share their experiences and engage in meaningful conversations, whether that's online, in their future careers, or with elected officials."

Students learned how to effectively share their experiences in farming, overcome obstacles, and develop their communication and personal skills. Learning sessions included advocacy training, communication basics, and social media outreach. Students heard from farmers, industry representatives, social media influencers, and congressional staff about how to communicate effectively on key issues. The group also toured the Missouri Soybean Center for Innovation to learn more about the advancements and research being done on behalf of farmers.

The academy concluded with mock legislative hearings at the Missouri State Capitol, where students presented on key agricultural issues before Missouri state Sens. Mike Bernskoetter and Jamie Burger and state Reps. Elizabeth Fuchs, Willard Haley, Will Jobe, Doyle Justus, Peggy McGaugh, Jim Schulte, and Emily Weber. Participants also had the chance to meet with Missouri Director of Agriculture Chris Chinn.

"The HYPE Academy provides students an opportunity to add tools to their toolbox and effectively communicate their beliefs and experiences on issues that are important not only to them but all of Missouri agriculture," noted Missouri FFA State Advisor Keith Dietzschold. "With so many people removed from agriculture, Missouri Corn and Missouri FFA felt this was one avenue we could partner together to help young individuals find their voice and understand the importance of telling the agriculture story to the public."
