Alachua County Recognizes Sexual Assault Awareness Month with Community Events

In recognition of the 2026 Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the Alachua County Victim Services & Rape Crisis Center is hosting and participating in a series of events to raise awareness, honor survivors and engage the community in prevention efforts.

Throughout the month, residents are invited to attend the following events:

• Survivors of Violence Art Exhibit
  Thursday, April 23 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
  Harn Museum of Art (3259 Hull Road, Gainesville)
  In collaboration with the Harn Museum, the exhibit features artwork created by survivors, revealing their courage, resilience and healing.​
  
  
• Alachua County Proclamation Presentation
  Tuesday, April 28 at 11:30 a.m.
  Alachua County Administration Building in the Jack Durrance Auditorium (12 SE 1st St. Gainesville)
  The Alachua County Commission will formally proclaim April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, honoring survivors and recognizing the advocates and sexual assault nurse examiners who provide critical 24/7 services to individuals impacted by violence.
  
  
• Denim Day
  Wednesday, April 29
  Denim Day is a nationally recognized campaign that began in response to a court ruling that blamed a survivor's clothing for an assault. Today, it stands as a powerful symbol of protest against victim-blaming and a call to stand in solidarity with survivors.

"These events provide an opportunity for our community to come together in support of survivors while raising awareness about the realities of sexual violence," said Bethan O'Connor, community education project coordinator. "We are committed to creating spaces where survivors feel seen, supported and empowered."

Sexual Assault Awareness Month is observed nationwide each April to increase public understanding of sexual violence and to promote prevention efforts. The Alachua County Victim Services & Rape Crisis Center encourages community members to participate, show support, and help foster a culture of respect and accountability.
