Celebrate the power of stories and art at Humanities & Arts Action Day on Nov. 13

Wayne State University will host Humanities & Arts Action Day on Friday, Nov. 13, a campuswide celebration of the ideas, creativity and stories that shape our communities. The free, daylong event invites students, educators, artists and community members to explore how the arts and humanities - literature, history, philosophy, language, art, music and more - help people connect, create and make meaning in a changing world.

Amid continued concerns over funding for these sectors, this event is an opportunity to reflect on shared interests and needs, and to develop networks, resources and skills for effective work in the arts and humanities.

Attendees can expect engaging speakers, interactive workshops, generative discussions, and opportunities to meet local cultural partners and creators.

Keynote speakers include Sam White, founding artistic and executive director of Shakespeare in Detroit, and Dr. Stephen Kidd, executive director of the National Humanities Alliance.

Highlights include short "soapbox" talks, an all-day art-in performance series, and skill-builder workshops on publishing, podcasting, zine-making, and data use.

"This event builds on the work we started last year," said Victoria Stewart, assistant director of the Wayne State University Humanities Center and organizer of this event. "By including the arts sector more intentionally and creating programs that address needs and interests in our sector through action, we are building and renewing relationships that benefit academic and public workers in these fields, as well as the communities that we all serve."

Registration is free and includes lunch. Attendance is open to the public. This activity is supported in part by the Michigan Arts and Culture Council.
