NEWARK, N.J. - Today, U.S. Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Andy Kim (D-NJ) issued the following joint statement in response to FEMA's denial of Governor Mikie Sherrill's appeal for a major disaster declaration following the severe winter storm and snowstorm that struck New Jersey on February 22 and 23, 2026:
"New Jersey rightfully qualifies for millions in disaster aid because the severe storms our state suffered this past winter exceeds the threshold for federal disaster assistance - exactly the kind of catastrophe that this support is designed to respond to. Without good explanation or justification, Trump's government is again politicizing disaster relief and denying New Jersey the support needed. This is a completely unacceptable decision - we will continue working with Governor Sherrill and communities across our state to find solutions so that New Jersey is prepared for future winter storms."
