Justin Ames, associate professor in management and the College of Business and Economics Robert V. Hansberger Chair of Business Ethics, presented the inaugural Responsible Business and Ethics Awards on Tuesday, April 14. The awards recognize individuals who show extraordinary efforts in advancing student training in ethical decision-making, faculty research and community outreach supporting responsible business practices. Two students (McKenna Stallones and Michael Hemmert), one faculty member (Anna Land) and one community member (Ruth Jebe) received awards. The ceremony took place following a presentation by Tyler Shultz, the Theranos whistleblower.
"Shortly after my installment as the Hansberger Chair of Business Ethics, I quickly recognized that we already have a growing culture within COBE that recognizes business ethics and responsible business practice is core to a modern business education," Ames said. "Together with the Responsible Business Initiative we identified great work being done in the classroom, research fields and business community by so many people at the college. We just wanted to highlight that and make sure we have an avenue to celebrate this important work in the future."
Two students, McKenna Stallones and Michael Hemmert, both business administration students, received the Outstanding Academic Achievement in Ethics award. This award recognizes students with exceptional academic achievement, dedication to ethical inquiry and a commitment to excellence in the study and practice of ethics.
Michael Hemmert and Justin AmesStallones applied ethics course concepts in her everyday life, regularly explaining how class concepts gave her a better understanding of what was happening at work and helped her navigate tough situations. Hemmert broke down class concepts into easy to understand examples and demonstrated creativity and growth in developing his own thoughts and mental models.
Anna Land, associate professor in supply chain management, received the Research Excellence Supporting Responsible Business Award. Anna's research focuses on how firms design and manage supply chains in ways that balance performance with ethical, social and environmental considerations. Her research advances responsible business through a sustained focus on sustainable supply chain management, stakeholder outcomes and ethical decision-making under complexity.
Ruth Jebe, retired associate professor of management and the inaugural Hansberger Chair of Business Ethics, received the Responsible Business Leadership Award. This award goes to a community member who has shown exemplary leadership and a demonstrated commitment to advancing responsible business practices through ethical decision-making, stakeholder stewardship and sustainable value creation.
In addition to being an accomplished researcher and educator, Jebe developed programming that connected with students and the broader community in the exploration of ethical issues in business. She was an effective bridge between academic thought and local industry, helping to train students and advance the cause of business ethics education.
