Steinhardt Statement on New Jersey Registering 6,600 Non-Citizens to Vote

"The Governor's admission that approximately 6,600 individuals who identified themselves as noncitizens were improperly registered to vote is a serious failure of New Jersey's election safeguards.

"Regardless of whether the cause was software or human error, the State's voter registration system failed. The public deserves to know whether the problem extends beyond the registrations already identified.

"I am calling on the Legislature to suspend no-excuse vote-by-mail until an independent forensic audit of New Jersey's statewide voter rolls is completed and their accuracy is certified. During that time, voting should take place in person with government-issued identification, subject to accommodations required by federal law.

"This is not a partisan issue. Every eligible voter deserves confidence that their lawful vote counts equally.

"Election confidence cannot be demanded-it must be earned through transparency, accountability, and secure elections.
