Buffalo, New York - Under the direction of Mayor Christopher P. Scanlon, U.S. flags located on City of Buffalo government buildings and properties will be lowered to half-staff on Thursday, September 11, 2025, in remembrance of the heroes who lost their lives and those who sacrificed their lives for others, in the terrorist attacks on 9/11. Additionally, the top of Buffalo City Hall, as well as partnering structures and buildings that make up the Buffalo Landmark Illumination Team (BuffaloLIT), will be lit in patriotic colors, both Wednesday and Thursday nights, in recognition of Patriot Day.
Mayor Christopher P. Scanlon said, "Patriot Day gives us time to reflect on the devastating terror attacks that took nearly 3,000 lives. We commemorate those who we lost, including the 50 Western New York residents who died, as well as those individuals who had a close connection to our community. I also want to give thanks to the brave first responders who put their lives on the line. I encourage everyone to take a moment today to consider what we stand for as a nation and how we can work together to make the world a better place for all."
In the United States, Patriot Day occurs on September 11th of each year in memory of the 2,996 lives lost and the heroes who emerged that fateful day in 2001. Patriot Day is a day of national remembrance where we are reminded of the importance of coming together as a community to honor the memory of those we lost and support those affected by the attacks. Flags will be returned to full staff on Friday, September 12, 2025.
