Interactive Dialogue with the Independent Expert on Somalia

EU statement

Thank you, President,

Madam Independent Expert, the European Union would like to thank you for your report. We share your concerns about the ongoing security challenges, political instability, and humanitarian crises that continue to hinder the full enjoyment of all human rights by all Somalis.

The EU welcomes the Federal Government's efforts to meet its international human rights obligations. Steps toward establishing the long-overdue National Independent Human Rights Commission represent a significant and welcome development. We note, however, that without parliamentary approval, the Commission is not yet fully established. We urge the Federal Government of Somalia to expedite this process as well as to ensure that the Commission is pluralistic, credible and independent.

Ensuring accountability for human rights violations also remains a critical priority. In this regard, we look forward to the establishment of the Law Reform Commission and the Judicial Administration Commission.

Finally, allow me to express the EU's sincere gratitude for your dedicated years of service and valuable contributions to monitoring and promoting human rights in Somalia.

Ms. Dyfan, in the context of UN and AU transition in Somalia, how can the international community best support Somalia in guaranteeing the human rights of all Somalis going forward?
