LOS ANGELES, CA - Mandala Space Ventures is proud to announce that our Founder and CEO, Dr. Leon Alkalai, has been recognized by the Los Angeles Times as a 2026 Defense & Aerospace Industry Visionary.
The annual recognition honors a select group of leaders driving innovation across aerospace and defense. It celebrates those whose work is shaping the future of the industry through technological advancement, strategic leadership, and lasting impact.
Dr. Alkalai has spent more than three decades at the forefront of aerospace innovation, advancing transformative technologies from concept to commercialization. Prior to founding Mandala Space Ventures, he spent 32 years at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where he served as capture lead for the GRAIL lunar mission and received the NASA Distinguished Individual Achievement Medal twice in 2011 and 2019.
Dr. Alkalai now leads Mandala Space Ventures, a venture studio and fund focused on identifying, investing in, and scaling breakthrough companies across the space and deep-tech sectors. Through Mandala and the Explorer-1 Venture Fund, he has helped support some of the industry's fastest-growing companies, including Stoke Space and Varda Space Industries.
Dr. Alkalai is also co-founder, Chairman, and CTO of Sophia Space, Mandala's flagship portfolio company developing next-generation orbital edge computing infrastructure powered by space-based solar energy. He has also led accelerator initiatives through Mandala Space Ventures in partnership with both the Canadian Space Agency and the UK Space Agency, helping foster innovation across the global space ecosystem.
