Alexandria, Va. - During National Recovery Month in September, the City of Alexandria and communities across the nation recognize the resilience of individuals who are overcoming addictions and mental health challenges, while encouraging those in need of support to get help.
Join the Department of Community and Human Services (DCHS) on Wednesday, September 17 from 3 to 6 p.m. at Ben Brenman Park (4800 Brenman Park Drive) where all are welcome to show their support for recovery. There will be free food trucks, health and wellness resources, music, swag, and family-friendly activities.
Substance use conditions are often misunderstood and overlooked, but at the heart are people in need of health care and a sense of belonging through social support.
The 2024 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, cited by the Centers for Disease Control, reported more than 40 million people aged 12+ had a substance use condition. This includes dependencies on alcohol, opioids, stimulants, cannabis, and other drugs.
Across the US, an estimated 80,391 people died from drug overdoses - a 26.9% decrease from 2023. In Virginia, 2,463 residents were lost to overdose, 85% of which were linked to opioids. The reductions in overdose deaths show that treatment and prevention work, while the continued prevalence drives the need to ensure that people have access to information that supports recovery efforts.
DCHS provides access to treatment options 24 hours a day at 703.746.3636 (Virginia Relay 711). To get help with stopping the use of opioids, call the Medication Assisted Opioid Treatment Program at 703.746.3610. All residents are encouraged to obtain Naloxone (Narcan) as a first aid measure for any opioid overdoses they may encounter and to properly dispose of unwanted medicines at permanent drug drop boxes to avoid misuse.
By commemorating National Recovery Month, the City affirms that treatment works, recovery is achievable, and the community makes it possible. Come out to show support.
