The University of Alaska Fairbanks College of Business and Security Management has named Meg Nordale, president of GHEMM Co., as the 2026 Business Leader of the Year award recipient.
GHEMM Co. is a leading Alaska-based construction firm. During the past 30 years, Nordale rose through the organization from a bookkeeper to executive leadership. She will retire in 2027.
Nordale has served as president of the Associated General Contractors of Alaska and as the chair of the University of Alaska Foundation Board of Directors.
Nordale helped lead a construction management workforce initiative that raised nearly $900,000 to support student training and career pathways across Alaska. Her dedication to education is also reflected in scholarships, mentorship and her engagement with UAF students and programs.
Nordale has contributed her time and leadership to numerous organizations, including the UA Foundation, the CBSM Business Advisory Council, Rotary Club and KUAC public broadcasting.
Lisa Putnam, vice president of public relations at Usibelli Coal Mine, said Nordale's legacy is not only in the buildings she helps create but also in the people she inspires and the community she strengthens.
"Meg doesn't lead loudly," Putnam said. "She leads thoughtfully, investing in others and helping them grow along the way."
Nordale and her husband, Bob Schruf, enjoy spending time outdoors while traveling, hiking, fishing and working in their yard at home. They share those experiences with their six adult children and are now beginning to share them with their grandchildren.
A celebration in her honor will be held on Nov. 7, 2026. For more information or to reserve a table or a sponsorship in advance, contact Tammy Tragis-McCook at [email protected].
