JEFFERSON CITY, MO, JAN. 26, 2026 - The Missouri Department of Natural Resources' State Historic Preservation Office announces the opening of the 2026 application cycle for the Historic Preservation Fund grants. This program expects to bring more than $400,000 from the Historic Preservation Fund to Missouri's historic communities.
The department will host virtual grant application workshops Jan. 28 and 29. Pre-applications are due Feb. 27.
These grants support projects that relate directly to the identification, evaluation or protection of historic properties. They can be used to fund:
• Construction projects for the purpose of protecting, rehabilitating or restoring historic properties. Eligible properties must be listed on the National Register of Historic Places and have maintained their historic integrity. Construction projects must also demonstrate that they are not eligible for federal or state historic tax credits. Only one construction project will be awarded in this grant round.
• Training for members of historic preservation commissions or city staff members.
• Workshops, conferences and posters related to historic preservation.
• Walking tours of National Register-listed sites.
• Preservation plans.
• Design guidelines.
• Historic contexts.
• Internships for work on preservation projects.
• Inventorying of archival files related to archaeology or historic architecture.
• Architectural and archeological surveys.
• Nominations to the National Register of Historic Places.
• Maintenance and construction documents for publicly owned, National Register-listed buildings, including historic structure reports, maintenance plans and planning for repair or rehabilitation work (designs, feasibility studies, etc.).
Certified Local Governments, county governmental entities, municipalities and nonprofit organizations with a historic preservation mission are eligible to apply for the Historic Preservation Fund grants. The department will first consider applications from Certified Local Governments in accordance with federal regulations.
"The department helps provide opportunities for the preservation of important cultural and historic resources within the state," said Laura Hendrickson, director of the department's Division of State Parks. "The Historic Preservation Fund pass-through grants help in those efforts."
The Missouri State Historic Preservation Office operates within the Department of Natural Resources' Division of State Parks.
