Consumers Energy Restores Power to More Than 57,000 Customers Following Severe Thunderstorm and High Winds

Jackson, Mich. Tuesday, April 28, 2026

Consumers Energy crews are working around the clock to restore power to customers as a result of the heavy rain and high winds that swept across the southwestern portion of the state.

With more than 88,000 residential and business customers impacted, Consumers Energy has restored power to more than 57,000 customers since the storm's onset with upwards of 600 crews working to restore power to customers by tomorrow evening.

"Restoration is our goal, but safety and efficiency are our foundation. As we work to bring each customer back online, we want to make sure both our customers and our crews are safe," said Jean Kang, one of Consumers Energy's officers in charge for restoration. "We want to thank our customers for their continued patience as we move to get the lights on for every impacted customer."

Consumers Energy also reminds the public to practice extreme caution on the road and be on the lookout for crews. Additionally, heavy winds can result in downed powerlines. For safety, please stay at least 25 feet away from downed wires and call 9-1-1 and Consumers Energy at 800-477-5050 to report them.

Customers can check the status of outages at ConsumersEnergy.com/Outage. They can also sign up to get outage alerts and restoration times sent via phone, email or text. Text 'REG' to 232273 or visit www.ConsumersEnergy.com/alerts.

Kang also advises the public to consider additional safety tips:

  • Never use a generator in an attached garage, basement, enclosed patio or near any air intakes. Doing so could cause a generator to produce hazardous levels of carbon monoxide, an odorless, colorless and deadly gas. Read more guidance on safe generator use here.
  • Consumers Energy will trim or remove trees interfering with electric restoration activities. Once safe to do so, cleanup ofdebris from tree trimming or removal during a storm emergency is the responsibility of individual property owners.
  • In some cases, the mast that holds the electric service wires to a home or business may have been damaged or torn away. Crews will reconnect the wires to a home, but only a licensed electrician can repair or replace a mast or a cable.
