Veteran Cancer Detection Initiative Funding Continues Through Community Development Block Grant

The Marion County Board of County Commissioners has approved funding to support a critical new health initiative for local veterans through its 2025-26 Annual Action Plan.

As part of the plan, the Board approved a $50,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for The Vet Resource Center, Inc., a local nonprofit dedicated to serving veterans throughout Marion County. The funding will help launch an early cancer detection program aimed at low to moderate-income veterans, particularly those who sustained service-related disabilities and are at elevated risk of developing cancer.

The Vet Resource Center plans to use the funds to provide 66 advanced cancer detection test kits and associated blood draws. These Galleri tests can identify more than 50 types of cancer in their earliest stages, dramatically improving treatment outcomes. Currently, such testing is not available through the Veterans Administration, leaving a crucial gap in care that this project seeks to fill.

Approximately 8% of Marion County's 46,000 veterans have a disability rating connected to their service. Many have been exposed to harmful substances such as Agent Orange or burn pits, putting them at higher risk for cancer. Early screening is essential, since many tests are only offered once symptoms appear - often too late for effective treatment.

The Vet Resource Center, Inc. will match the county's funding with more than $80,000, with goals to serve 70 veterans between Oct. 1, 2025, and Sept. 30, 2026, and to increase early cancer detection by 10% over the previous year.

This project is part of Marion County's broader commitment to developing viable urban communities by providing decent housing, a suitable living environment, and expanded economic opportunities. This is particularly true for residents with low to moderate incomes.
