Harrisburg, PA - Treasurer Stacy Garrity announced today that the next auction of unclaimed property from the Pennsylvania Treasury Department will take place this Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 29 and 30 and will feature jewelry, coins and collectibles.
The online auction will feature 6,120 items which were previously safeguarded in Treasury's vault.
"I'm excited about this week's auction and for Pennsylvanians to see some of the unique items from Treasury's vault. With support from our auctioneer partners, Pook & Pook, these auctions are a great opportunity to release some very interesting items."
Some items of interest to be auctioned include:
Treasury works with Pook & Pook in Downingtown for its auctions. Anyone interested in viewing the unclaimed property available in this week's auction or to register to bid can visit their website, pookandpook.com.
"The October 29th Coins & Jewelry auction taking place at Pook & Pook's gallery in Downingtown, Pennsylvania is particularly intriguing as it includes such a breadth of tantalizing jewelry pieces from the vault of the Pennsylvania Treasury Department's Bureau of Unclaimed Property. Pook & Pook has had the distinguished honor of working with the state and assisting with this important and incredibly diligent procedure for processing unclaimed property for the last ten years. We're so excited to again be providing bidders with the rare opportunity to acquire these extraordinary pieces at our fall auction."
Any item listed for auction is subject to change prior to the auction if new information regarding the item's authenticity, estimated value, quality or other determining factor is discovered. Treasury employees and their immediate families are prohibited from bidding.
"Our team works diligently to identify the owners of unclaimed property and return it to them, but sometimes, we must make room for incoming items in our vault by auctioning items. The proceeds from any item sold remain available for a rightful owner to claim no matter how much time passes."
Before being auctioned, Treasury searches for the rightful owners for at least three years. Military decorations and memorabilia received as tangible unclaimed property are never auctioned, and Treasury will continue to search for the veteran who earned them or his or her family.
Treasury is working to return more than $5 billion in unclaimed property owed to about one in 10 Pennsylvanians. The average claim is worth more than $1,000.
Since taking office, Treasurer Garrity has returned more than $1 billion in unclaimed property to hardworking Pennsylvanians, businesses, nonprofits and local government agencies.
