Washington, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (TX-30) sent a letter to Department of Defense leadership demanding answers following alarming reports that qualified U.S. Army officers were blocked from promotion based on race and gender.
The letter was sent to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Secretary of the Army Daniel Driscoll, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General John D. Caine, raising serious constitutional and legal concerns about political interference in the military promotion process.
"Denying promotions to highly qualified servicemembers because of their race or gender is not only illegal - it is a direct assault on the Constitution and the very principles our military is sworn to defend," said Rep. Crockett.
According to reports, four Army officers - including two Black officers and two women - were removed from a promotion list despite being vetted and selected through established military processes. Rep. Crockett's letter underscores that such actions may violate federal law and undermine the integrity of the armed forces.
The Congresswoman also highlighted the broader implications of these actions, noting that the U.S. military remains one of the most diverse institutions in the world - yet its senior leadership continues to be overwhelmingly white and male.
"Black servicemembers have long carried a disproportionate burden in defending this nation, only to face systemic barriers when it comes to advancement and recognition," Crockett added. "We cannot allow a return to the shameful legacy of discrimination that once defined military policy."
In the letter, Rep. Crockett pressed Department of Defense leadership to clarify:
Rep. Crockett warned that these actions threaten morale, erode trust in military leadership, and compromise the principle of a merit-based, apolitical armed forces.
"The American people deserve a military that reflects our values - not one that mirrors discrimination from our past," said Rep. Crockett. "I expect swift answers and full accountability."
