Eugene Airport has recently launched GoodMaps, a cutting-edge indoor navigation platform, to help travelers navigate the airport terminal with greater confidence and independence, especially those with sensory, mobility or language barriers.
GoodMaps uses LiDAR-based technology and camera-based positioning to deliver very precise guidance, reportedly with sub-30-centimeter accuracy, without requiring costly new infrastructure. The service includes audio guidance for people who are blind or have low vision, visual instructions for deaf or hard-of-hearing passengers, step-free route options for those using wheelchairs or who otherwise need accessible paths, and multilingual support in more than 18 languages.
Officials at EUG describe the rollout as part of the airport's commitment to inclusivity and accessibility, as well as the City's focus on creating a sense of belonging.
"This partnership with GoodMaps perfectly embodies our 'Fly Local' philosophy," said Eugene Airport Director Cathryn Stephens, A.A.E., "From our region's residents to international visitors exploring the Willamette Valley, from business travelers to people travelling for leisure, GoodMaps ensures every passenger can navigate our terminal with confidence and independence."
To introduce GoodMaps to the public, the airport held a live demonstration at the terminal lobby on Aug. 25. The event included live navigation demos, discussions about accessibility advocacy, and behind-the-scenes looks at how the LiDAR-based mapping works.
Travelers can begin using the platform by downloading the GoodMaps app (available for iOS and Android), activating it during their visit, and selecting destinations or amenities inside the airport to receive step-by-step guidance.
Eugene Airport hopes GoodMaps will reduce stress for many travelers and make every trip through EUG more navigable and more accessible. More information can be found at flyEUG.com in the airport services section.
