In Memoriam: Dolores Huerta

San José, CA - The spirit of activism and the pursuit of social justice are woven into the history and identity of San José State University, and Dolores Huerta exemplified these values. Her extraordinary life of courage, conviction, and service transformed our nation and inspired communities through hope and action.

Dolores visited our campus many times over the years, and I was personally honored to meet and spend time with her. Each encounter was a reminder of her remarkable strength, unwavering determination, and deeply held belief in the power of people to create meaningful change. She remained an extraordinary role model throughout her life, demonstrating that leadership is not solely about the causes we champion, but about the courage and persistence to stand up for what is right.

Her legacy is especially meaningful to our Spartan community, where generations of students have embraced the responsibility to challenge injustice, advocate for others, and advance the public good. Her influence will live on in the spirit of activism, civic engagement, and community leadership that defines San José State and the generations of Spartans yet to come.

I join the Spartan community in extending my heartfelt condolences to her family, loved ones, and the countless communities whose lives she touched.

May she rest in power and in peace.
