ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA - A new public art piece has joined Winthrop University's impressive collection.

Inflorescence, a piece by upcoming graduate Corrina Leverett, can now be viewed in front of Rutledge Building.

Leverett, who recently exhibited her sculpture and ceramic work in the Arts Council of York County's 36th Annual Juried Exhibition, completed the sculpture last year in Fine Arts Professor Shaun Cassidy's course.

"What makes this piece unique is that it is entirely made from scrap rebar and sheet metal," Leverett explained. "I was inspired by repetition and movement found in nature, and found it interesting to see how that would translate into a sculpture."

"When creating this piece," she continued, "I was particularly interested in how the structure can imply movement through the use of repetition by creating clusters of the same shape in different sizes. I chose the color pink to contrast and stand out in the environment."

After graduating in May 2026, Leverett, whose current work combines sculpture and ceramics, hopes to join a residency to continue exploring this interest.

Students in Cassidy's classes frequently go on to display their artwork on campus and in the surrounding communities. Recent projects have included creating four steel panels for the existing brick frames in Hardin Garden, which were formerly waterfall fixtures; and a series of sculptures at the U.S. headquarters of Atlas Copco in Rock Hill's University Center.
