Hawaiian Electric working to restore 95% of impacted customers by Friday
- About 86% of impacted customers are now restored
- Oahu customers with power still asked to conserve energy through tomorrow
- Assistance from mainland utilities has started to arrive

HONOLULU, Aug. 18, 2026 - Hawaiian Electric has released maps with estimated times of restoration for areas on Hawaii Island, Oahu and Maui for customers who remain without power following the devasting effects of Hurricane Lala. The company expects 95% of all impacted customers to be restored across the state by Friday, except for certain remote and severely damaged areas of South Hawaii Island. Areas of Puna, North and South Kohala and the southern part Kau, Naalehu, Punaluu and Kilauea which could take at least two weeks.
Hawaiian Electric crews will once again work through the night to repair damaged infrastructure and restore power to the approximately 33,600 customers who remain without power.
As of 7 p.m.:

Hawaii Island: Approximately 24,000 customers remain without power. Most of the outages are in the Puna area, North and South Kona, North and South Kohala, Hamakua, North and South Hilo, and Kau. Damage assessments were completed inaccessible areas of Puna and Hamakua. More than half of the transmission lines damaged by the storm have been repaired. Hamakua Energy, the island's largest independent power producer, was reconnected to the grid. Employees from SoCal Edison began arriving in Hilo to assist with restoration efforts

Maui County: With a majority of impacted customers brought back online, crews are working through the night to restore a majority of customers in Haiku and Peahi as well as a pocket in East Maui. With large trees blocking access to roads currently, customers in Piiholo, Olinda, Alaluana areas are asked to prepare for an overnight outage. About 1,700 remain without power. Maui had nine transmission/subtransmission lines affected by the storm and six have been restored.

Oahu: Crew restored about 10,000 customers in Kaneohe, Kahala, Kahuku, Aiea,Nanakuli and Makiki today. Repairs are expected to resolve the majority of outages tomorrow. About 7,970 customers remain without power in Honolulu, Leeward and Windward areas. Oahu had 30 transmission/subtransmission lines affected by the storm and 13 have been restored. Customers from Salt Lake to East Honolulu who do have electricity are asked to continue to conserve power through tomorrow.
