Rio Grande and Saguache Counties - The Colorado Department of Transportation, in partnership with United Companies, completed the resurfacing project along CO 112 on Wednesday, Oct. 15. The project improved approximately 13 miles of CO 112 in Del Norte from the US Highway 160/CO 112 intersection, Mile Point 0, to the CO 112/US 285 junction, MP 13.2.
"CO 112 is a busy highway for south-central Colorado travelers," said CDOT Regional Transportation Director Julie Constan. "Local commuters, as well as agriculture and freight drivers, use this as an efficient connector and rural bypass route when traveling through the San Luis Valley. The new resurfacing will make this valuable alternative route more reliable for Valley travelers."
Work included milling the old asphalt surface, paving with a mixture of recycled and new asphalt (three applications) and bridge repairs. Crews worked in coordination with the Union Pacific Railroad, for rail repairs, and the City of Del Norte, for utility repairs.
Newly installed guardrail is 31 inches high, designed to meet new safety standard requirements. The higher railing will help veering vehicles remain on the road more effectively. The new asphalt will add years of life to the highway, provide a smoother road surface and will add durability by increasing the resistance of ruts and road damage.
