Giant fruit, vegetable contest at UH Urban Garden Center

Huge, home-grown pumpkins, sunflowers, bell peppers and more will be on display at the University of Hawaiʻi Urban Garden Center's Second Saturday at the Garden, featuring the Giant Fruit and Vegetable Contest Weigh-in and Showcase on September 13, 9-11:30 a.m.

This family-friendly event is sponsored by the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience (CTAHR). A display of giant pumpkins and ornamental corn will also be available, offering tips for people to grow their own oversized produce at home. The official weigh-in begins at 9:30 a.m.

Event details:

  • When: September 13, 9-11:30 a.m.
  • Where: UH Urban Garden Center, 955 Kamehameha Highway, Pearl City, HI 96782 (behind the Public Storage building)
  • Cost: General admission is free; RSVP online.

Other free activities include:

  • Garden exhibits with composting plants.
  • Master Gardner discussions about vermicast (worm casings) and demonstrations of tree care and grafting.
  • Demonstrations on how to root flowering plant cuttings, a plant swap, and a "Got a Plant Question?" booth where Master Gardeners will offer expert advice.

Parking is limited, and carpooling is encouraged. Please wear shoes, bring water and be prepared for rain or shine. Children must be accompanied by a parent or adult supervisor.
