On CNN's State of the Union, CMS AdministratorAdministrator Dr. Mehmet Oz refused to commit to extending the Affordable Care Act enhanced premium subsidies at the end of the year to prevent 22 million Americans from facing premiums that are more expensive by an average of 114%. CNN's Dana Bash pressed Oz to commit to making sure Americans can afford insurance 10 times - and Oz refused to do so each time.
Americans blame Donald Trump and Republicans by a margin of 26 points for health care premium increases. If Trump and Republicans cared about lowering health care costs, they would be working with Democrats on a permanent extension of the enhanced ACA premium tax credits millions of Americans rely on.
In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:
"Donald Trump and his administration are leaving millions of Americans on the verge of making an impossible choice between staying insured and keeping food on the table come January. Oz had ten opportunities not to turn his back on millions of families, but he failed every time. Trump and Republicans created this massive health care crisis, but instead of working with Democrats to stand up for everyday Americans, Trump would rather focus on increasing his personal fortune, building his luxurious ballroom, and protecting his tax cuts for billionaires that cost 10 times as much as it would to extend the ACA tax credits."
