Relive CIAA Week 2026: Wins, Pride and Bulldog Energy Everywhere

Bowie State University took center stage during CIAA Week 2026, hosting thousands of alumni, fans, students and supporters for a high-energy celebration of championship basketball and HBCU pride. The tournament honored the rich legacy of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association while showcasing the leadership, hospitality and unity that define the Bulldog community.

This year's tournament also carried special meaning. The CIAA paused to recognize the life and legacy of Bowie State Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation Sports Clyde Doughty, Jr. who passed away in February. Conference officials, university leaders and members of the Bulldog family honored his decades of service to Bowie State and the CIAA, celebrating his unwavering commitment to student-athletes and competitive excellence. The tribute reflected the profound impact Doughty made on the university and across the conference.

On the court, Bowie State's men's and women's basketball teams delivered standout performances. The men battled their way to the quarterfinals, competing with grit and determination. The women advanced to the semifinals and closed out an exceptional season as the 2025-26 CIAA Northern Division regular-season champions, underscoring their discipline, teamwork and championship mindset.

Several student athletes earned conference recognition for their impact throughout the tournament. Mayah Garner powered the Bulldogs with 13 points and seven rebounds in the semifinal victory over Livingstone, earning CIAA Food Lion Game MVP honors and a place on the CIAA All-Tournament Team. On the men's side, junior guard Jaiden McGhee earned Second Team All-CIAA honors, freshman forward Charles Thomas III secured a spot on the CIAA All-Rookie Team, and KJ West was named to the CIAA All-Tournament Men's Team.

The excitement extended well beyond the hardwood. Bowie State's Symphony of Soul captured the CIAA Fanfest Battle of the Bands title for the fourth consecutive year, electrifying crowds and reinforcing the university's musical excellence. The cheerleaders, Royal Court, Student Government Association and members of BSU Greek Life organizations energized fans throughout the week, creating an atmosphere that reflected true Bulldog spirit. BSU had a strong presence at CIAA High School Education Day and the Career Expo.

One student shared his impressions of the expo. "The Career Expo showed me that opportunity is about preparation and being ready to take on any new challenges," said communications major Johntae Wallace, junior class vice president. "The expo also reminded me that your network is just as important as the talent you bring to your field."

CIAA Week also marked a historic milestone as Head Men's Basketball Coach Darrell Brooks retired after a 40-year coaching career, including 16 years leading his alma mater. Brooks leaves a legacy defined by excellence, mentorship and integrity, having shaped generations of student-athletes and strengthened the Bulldog tradition.

"The excitement, pride and unity on display throughout the CIAA Tournament remind us that Bulldog Nation is strong, resilient and always rising," said President Dr. Aminta H. Breaux. "Thank you to our student athletes, coaches, staff, volunteers, alumni and fans who made this tournament unforgettable. Together, we continue to elevate Bowie State's legacy of excellence."

From heartfelt tributes to thrilling victories, CIAA Week 2026 showcased the best of Bowie State - competitive excellence, community pride and unmistakable Bulldog energy. The last official BSU event of the tournament was a Bold & Gold Lounge: A Kickback for Clyde celebration in honor of VP Doughty. Hosted by the Office of Alumni Engagement & Stewardship, the BSU family was joined by members of its extended HBCU and CIAA family for a touching final tournament tribute to him.
