REP. HOYLE STATEMENT ON THE PARTISAN RESOLUTION TO GIVE COVER TO THE ADMINISTRATION'S UNAUTHORIZED WAR

For Immediate Release: March 5, 2026

WASHINGTON D.C - After House Republicans voted against a resolution to end the use of U.S. military force in Iran without the consent of Congress (War Powers Resolution), Rep. Hoyle released the following statement after voting "no" to a separate resolution by Rep. Brian Mast that would have legitimized the Administration's current actions:

"Everyone can agree that Iran is the largest state sponsor of terrorism. The Khamenei regime inflicted terror against and murdered tens of thousands of its own citizens while masterminding attacks against American troops and our allies. However, this has been the case for decades now. Nothing in recent weeks has changed these facts to justify President Trump's illegal and unauthorized war in Iran.

The reality is that the arguments peddled in this resolution are the same ones that have been used to justify numerous illegal military involvements and endless wars under the guise of the 2001 Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF). When Congress passed the 2001 AUMF in the wake of the tragic 9/11 attacks, it was intended to allow the U.S. to pursue the terrorists who perpetrated 9/11.

However, for over two decades now, the 2001 AUMF has been abused beyond its initial intent to carry out U.S. military operations against numerous countries and groups that had nothing to do with 9/11.

I opposed this resolution because I believe it could be used as a backdoor attempt to set up a legal justification of President Trump's war in Iran under the outdated 2001 AUMF. This resolution follows the same playbook that has been used for far too long, and it needs to end now. And that is why I voted no on Representative Mast's resolution today."
