For the fifth consecutive year, Cameron University has been recognized for its support of military veterans through inclusion on the Military Times "Best for Vets: Colleges" rankings. Of the 41 institutions categorized as offering traditional and online instruction in the Southwest region, CU ranks sixth overall. Nationally, Cameron is placed 61st of the 125 schools in that category. For more than a decade, veterans have relied on the Military Times "Best for Vets: Colleges" as a top resource when making education decisions.
Cameron's ranking in "Best for Vets: Colleges" aligns with the many services and opportunities offered to veterans, service members and their families. One of the most important benefits is CU certification as a Yellow Ribbon school by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for waiving the remaining tuition not covered by the Post-9/11 GI bill for eligible students. Academic support is provided in the form of tutoring, academic and career advising, counseling, and assistance in applying for financial aid and veterans benefits.
CU offers numerous other military-friendly opportunities. These include a VA work-study program, participation in the National VA Collaboration group of School Certifying Officials to assist in improving VA educational benefit offerings, free admission for active duty members and their families and $1 admission for veterans to all sporting events and an active Student Veterans of America chapter. In addition, the Lawton Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution provided veterans cords for commencement.
Vet Fest focuses on various speakers, displays and presentations to improve the lives of our veterans and their dependents. Unique partnerships with agencies allow CU to offer special services such as hosting the Oklahoma City VA Health Care System for local community engagement events to provide a wide variety of health care services at CU. Other partnerships include Oklahoma Works, Forbes Coaching Counsel presentations and the Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs.
Additional services include Veteran/Military Resource Fairs that bring a variety of veterans-related resources and organizations to campus, scholarship opportunities, career support and hosting DoD/VA processors to assist with claims processing.
The Cameron University Office of Veterans Affairs is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday, and is located on the CU campus in Room 301 of the North Shepler Tower. For more information, call 580-581-2301.
Student success metrics are the most important factor in determining the relative ranking of schools on the list, followed closely by the range of military-specific resources and the level of financial assistance schools offer. Admissions and registration policies, human resources and assorted miscellaneous considerations also factor into the scoring rubric.
