Kristen Bell & Adam Brody on Their Marriage Advice
https://app.cimediacloud.com/r/3sJAtyO8iMea
Drew: I know it's not easy. I know it's has challenges, but I feel like you're so good at talking about that. I feel like you always keep it very real.
Kristen: I mean I have found that what I don't like about the way that Dax and I are represented is that anyone might take away from it like oh I just need to find my perfect puzzle piece I think that's actually kind of harmful to dating. I think the thing that people should focus on is, do I love myself enough in order to be loved by someone else because thatlike Viola Davis says the true love of your life is yourself, and that's the reality.
Drew: I love that. Not an answer I was expecting and love it.
Adam: I'm gonna contradict you a little bit. Let's just say if you do choose, there's many right people, but if you choose a great person, you're on third base, and it's gonna, it'll take humility, and it'll take, you know, compromise and learning about yourself and all these things, but you know, if you're lucky enough to find someone great, I don't know, it's like people say it's hard.
Hopefully it's not that hard. Hopefully it's easier than it is hard too.
Kristen: I think you also, can I add one more thing? I think also it's really important to remember, every single moment that it is not you against me in any argument or disagreement or day in your life, it is us against the world if you like pour good energy and hard work into it, it's just like going to the gym you'll get results.
Kristen on Dax Shepard Asking Her to Move In with Him with a Tinkerbell Key
https://app.cimediacloud.com/r/boVcpsCzmO1A
Kristen: Our show spends a fair amount of time celebrating the really good parts of relationships like the first episode is mostly about how exciting it is to move in together. It's the tiniest things though, right? Because I remember when my husband asked me to move in with him, it was very exciting and I thought that that would be the moment I would remember forever and I really don't remember when or where he asked me, but what I do remember is that, the day after he asked me, he handed me a key and he had gone to the local key store and he had made, you know how you can pick what's on your key, the locksmith he had made me a Tinkerbell key. And I was elated. That was the simplest, silliest thing he could have done, and it will be forever meaningful for me.
Drew: And he took something that's so monumental and made it playful.
Kristen on Her Kids Not Wanting to Do a Family Halloween Costume This Year
https://app.cimediacloud.com/r/VFcCQ1SoDC0t
Drew: I haven't been anything for years because of the kids.
Adam: What do you mean because of the kids?
Drew: Well, because I've been like, you know, let me arrange Halloween for them, but now they're like 12 and 14 and wanna do their own thing with their friends.
Kristen: That's my first year too, because I always pitch a really great family costume, and this was the first year they were like, I don't think we want to be the cast of 'The Firm.'
Drew: And that's the best costume.
Adam: You were pitching that to me.
Kristen: But you don't get it, and that's OK. My goal is to be the deepest cut you could possibly imagine. Like if you, if it takes you until next January to figure out what I was, I'm on the right track. So we did, we did all 'Harry Potter' costumes one year with 30 different people. We did the cast of 'Anchorman.' We did the cast of 'Hocus Pocus' which obviously you'll know what that is, and the year, on the side on the left, OK, we did family puns. So I was Carrie BradShawshank Redemption. I was half Shawshank, half Carrie Bradshaw. Dax was Ferrariana Grande. And the girls were in and Outsiders and Pirates of the CaribbeAnne of Green Gables.
Drew: What are you guys doing this year?
Kristen: Well, as I said, I pitched the cast of 'The Firm' and they rejected it. So they're the girls are gonna be Little Red Riding Hood and The Girl with the Green Ribbon, and I pitched 'The Firm' cast to Dax, and I was like, 'Well, we could at least still be, I'll be Wilford Brimley, you'll be the Nordic Man' who was like the tall blonde-haired like goon guy who chases Tom Cruise the whole movie, and he said, 'Well, no, I wanna be Wilford Brimley' which, by the way, is the first time he's ever had an opinion on a Halloween costume, because normally he's like, 'What should I be?' And I said, 'OK, well, I guess we're both being Wilford Brimley.'
Adam: Everyone's fighting over Wilford Brimley, typical.
Adam on Early Days of "The OC" and Going to the Strokes Concert with Drew
https://app.cimediacloud.com/r/mEoSwsLDJx4I
Drew: What was that like when that launched?
Adam: It wasn't, I mean, on one hand, we were doing things like, OK, we'll go to Mick G's house. There's the cast of 'Charlie's Angels,' we're all going to the Strokes concert together. Cool. That was, that scene, you know, was mind blowing. On the flip side it was before social media, we were kind of in a bubble filming in Manhattan Beach, so it didn't feel to me maybe as, as big as it seemed, or I don't know.
Drew: Pop culture phenomenon.
Adam: Yeah, yeah, I was still just in Hollywood and so I don't know, it wasn't as, yeah, it didn't feel so wild, to be honest, except for those cool highlights.
Kristen on How She Became the Voice of Gossip Girl
https://app.cimediacloud.com/r/6xmZxV6J0wH5
Drew: Another show that I remember coming on and then was the biggest cultural phenomenon, 'Gossip Girl.' I mean, and then like I would be weird to not address that connection like then there's your wife right there.
Kristen: Well, you know what's funny is the reason I became Gossip Girl is because I was on a show called 'Veronica Mars' that had been just canceled and I had called the head of the network and said like 'You know, I don't have a job now obviously I heard you greenlit this show called 'Gossip Girl.' I understand I might be, you know, a couple of years too old to play one of the characters, but I'd love to be the narrator and I've done a lot of narration on 'Veronica Mars'' and they said yes, but Leighton was actually on one of my most favorite episodes of 'Veronica Mars.' She and Adam Scott played this, they had this like weird did they didn't they teacher student relationship that Veronica was investigating, and I remember I was like this girl is so sweet and so cute and such a talented actress and then cut to 2 years later I'm narrating her show.
Drew: I mean, and now working with her husband.
Adam: Twenty years later here we are
Drew on How Being on Set of "Big Miracle" with Kristen Changed Her Life Trajectory
https://app.cimediacloud.com/r/AkhvKtoCdnFy
Drew: We did that film together up in Alaska called 'Big Miracle' and it really changed my life. It sent me on a very different trajectory than I arrived there thinking I was in.
Kristen: How interesting.
Drew: I was like big drinker, party girl, single, had Douglas, and I would be with John Krasinski and Emily Blunt and you and Dax and I took that experience and I just thought, I don't think I'm being very serious about my personal life. And when I left that job, I stopped working and happened to re-meet my kid's dad, and I just thought, you know, I should put time into this. And then I didn't even know how to work after that. I was so confused. I thought I should just stay put, just stay vigil, just stick in this for a long time and then I don't think I've really been that other part of myself since that film either. That was the last time I remember really not thinking that there was the kind of thing I carry now, which is so beautiful, but oh it's a parallel life.
Kristen: It's like an awakening.
Kristen on Juggling Work & Motherhood
https://app.cimediacloud.com/r/sEmUmNiyOlrn
Kristen: I find that all the time when I'm like ping ponging from being like a full-time mom to someone who's working because the circumstances of either of those jobs are completely in opposition, and it is hard to ping pong between those two.
Drew: How do you do it? I did 'Blended' with Adam Sandler because I knew he was safe and Jackie and his two daughters, Sunny and Sadie, and I thought you know this is the only people I feel like equipped to attempt this with. Olive was 6 months old at the time. We went to Africa. It was such a wild experience I made Frankie on the movie. Like I came to 'Blended' with one child and I left with 2. And then I didn't know how to proceed anymore and, nobody felt as safe as Adam and Jackie and so I just, also knew how I felt. I was, I didn't know how to pull it off or how to do it. How, how do you do it? I'd like to go back at some point, like not leave here but entertain the idea of then how to juggle being an actor and a mom, like how's it gonna go for me? May I ask someone who's been pulling it off?
Kristen: I don't know that I've been pulling it off, but what I know is I'm doing it. And I think sometimes that's all you can ask for. I mean, I think I was completely content with being someone other than myself for so long and now only at 46 very comfortable with the fact that there are like different people inside me like in a way that like needs will come up like I really feel like I need to be creative this month so I'll take a small job or I really feel like I want to be nesting this month and be with my family and I think honoring both sides is the only way that I can do it in some sort of a balance but also taking into consideration I don't personally take work that's way too long and pulls me away from my family because as a priority I know that I need to have both sides and you can very easily take too much work.
Drew: Do you have the good meter in you where you can tell like, OK, they're OK right now, I can focus on some other things, or, oh my God, that something got off kilter.
Kristen: Yes. It's not an option for me to take work right now and take me away from these two middle schoolers who are like going through it.
Kristen on How She Chooses Jobs Now & Becoming an Adult
https://app.cimediacloud.com/r/5ghsU6Mp3BeF
Kristen: Will I enjoy my life if I'm taking this job, that's how I make decisions about work.
Drew: So if I'm stepping away from my personal life, will my professional life be filled with people that don't make me feel like I'm missing out on the other or enjoying myself while I'm doing so.
Kristen: Yeah, yeah. Or make you feel like you're ignoring people who are in middle school that very much need your support.
Drew: I never thought of it that way.
Kristen: That, I think, was the key for me. And so I've just realized, I gotta be okay with people not liking me, I gotta be okay with doing uncomfortable things, and that's kind of it. You can like talk it to oblivion until you just do it.
Drew: How did you get to that space?
Kristen: I have no idea. I truly have no idea. I think seeing my kids grow up and knowing that I wanted to model behaviors for them that I wanted them to have, which wasn't martyrdom as a mom and wasn't completely absent as a mom, I wanted to show them that it was possible to fulfill their lifelong passions, which for me is like acting and creativity, but also pour your energy into a family life that is operational and that makes everybody feel -
Drew: They're prioritized.
Kristen: Yeah, yeah. And so it was really almost like a coming to adulthood for me, like I was like I cannot act like a child anymore being like why can't I have this, how do you do it? I was like I have to just go I just have to do it, I just have to try as hard as I can and just do it.
Drew: I think that puts into words something I've never been able to put into words which was when I left our job and our little life that we were living in Alaska, after three months, I left and I was like I think I'd like to try growing up now.
Kristen: Isn't it crazy to have that realization? Because you have this realization one day, everyone will have it. It can be when you're 21, it can be when you're 79, where you realize the only person coming to rescue me is me.
Kristen on Why She Wanted to Go Barefaced with Drew
https://app.cimediacloud.com/r/3g87HDXkVWZD
Kristen: You were the inspiration for me suggesting this because there's no other show you could do this on.
Drew: Really.
Kristen: I don't think so. I can't be like, I'm gonna go on another talk show and take out my hair extensions. They're gonna be like, could you maybe that's not how we're gonna do this talk show, but I felt like, Drew, you are just inspiring to me because you are so full of whimsy and you are so full of loving life and you are also not afraid look at your little face and you are also not afraid to show all the sides of you and I thought, you know what? I feel like I came to this conclusion a couple years ago when my girls started wanting to experiment with like makeup and appearances and I thought I need to frame this well, so I said, you know what, makeup and dressing and fashion, it's about, it's not about concealment, it's about creativity. And for some reason when I taught that to them, I also finally heard it for the first time myself.
Drew: That was so well said.
Kristen on Why She Posts Barefaced on Social Media & Dax On Raising His Girls
https://app.cimediacloud.com/r/iTFEEP3pwC7Q
Drew: You do it on social media.
Kristen: Oh yeah, well, I also don't wear much of anything in real life and so I'm not, I'm certainly not gonna stop and do my a full beat in order to take an Instagram photo or put something out on social media. For me it's just like I wasn't born with makeup on. I'll survive if I post something on social media without makeup on, and I want other girls to feel, yeah, anybody to feel like that it's not mandatory.
Drew: How does Dax handle stuff with the girls as far as like when they wanna put on makeup or wear a certain outfit?
Kristen: Dax is a very no shame person in general I think because he's had to deal with getting sober and that in and of itself is really understanding what shame is and how it can like damage a personality and he's so supportive with what the girls like do or wanna be, I mean, yeah, and it's really, it's inspiring. He's actually much better at it than I am, but I mean in truth you know they're 11 and 13, so we haven't dealt with anything like insane. They haven't like wanted to leave the house not wearing pants or something, but I think just getting them comfortable with like internal validation as opposed to external validation is one of the key building blocks because honestly I don't know, I don't know what my girls are gonna be. He's also though like one I think that, and he's expressed this before, like people say like, 'Oh you have like this old cliche of you have daughters and you'll probably be on the on the porch waiting to fight off all these guys.'
Drew: I do think I'm gonna be that person. Go on.
Kristen: Yes, but also let me backdoor you to an idea. Did you, do you think that some of who you've become was directly related to or because of the mistakes you made? OK, so friction and mistakes provide character and learning experiences and I don't think I have the right to take those away from my daughters. I can guide them in the best way possible and give them the most up to date information and you know make sure that they feel good about themselves, but ultimately he had said to me, 'Remember your first kiss, like the first time you had butterflies about someone?' And what did that feel like inside your stomach? Yeah, so why would we wanna remove that from our kids' lives?
