North Dakota Marks National Fair Housing Month with Focus on Equal Access

BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. Kelly Armstrong and the North Dakota Department of Labor and Human Rights (NDDOLHR) commemorate National Fair Housing Month, which is celebrated nationally in April each year in recognition of the passing of the Fair Housing Act of 1968 (FHA).

FHA was established to ensure equal access to housing opportunities across the United States. The Act prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental or financing of housing on the basis of race, color, religion or national origin. This landmark legislation marked a major step forward in expanding civil rights protections. It remains foundational in promoting fair and equitable housing for all North Dakotans.

Under N.D.C.C. Ch. 14-02.5, the Housing Discrimination Act, is authorized to receive and investigate complaints of housing discrimination. NDDOLHR also provides North Dakotans with resources and education that empower all people to work, hire and live with confidence. During the 2023-25 biennium, the department investigated and closed 59 housing complaints with over $18,000 in settlements.

Residents interested in learning more may visit the NDDOLHR booth at the North Dakota State Capitol on April 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Resources will be available on fair housing, housing discrimination and housing rights. The booth will be located in the cafeteria corridor across from the Capitol Café.
