MINNEAPOLIS -The United Steelworkers (USW) today decried Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz's Executive Order halting environmental review and permitting work across broad parts of the state.
USW District 11 Director Cathy Drummond, who represents workers in Minnesota and eight other states, said that while the union supports thorough review to maintain a healthy environment, this order went too far, disrupting future mining projects and job creation.
"Our union has always backed responsible mining that takes into account the needs of the communities in which our members live and work," said Drummond. "But responsible mining is more than simply saying no. It requires working with companies and communities alike to ensure future projects meet all stakeholders' needs. The governor's order missed the mark."
Drummond called on state leaders to revisit this week's order, bringing a more balanced perspective.
"Minnesota mining isn't just our history. It's our present and our future. USW members are ready and willing to continue the tradition of responsible mining for generations to come, but we need our elected leaders to maintain a more balanced approach."
USW District 11 represents tens of thousands of workers employed in mining, manufacturing, metals, rubber, chemicals, glass, auto supply and the energy-producing industries, along with a growing number of workers in health care and service occupations.
