City of Edinburg to Honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day with Cemetery Cleanup
Edinburg, TX - The City of Edinburg's Juneteenth Committee, in partnership with the UTRGV Center for Student Involvement, will host a community service event in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The event will take place on Monday, January 19, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the historic Restlawn Cemetery, located at 1122 N. Jasman Road.
Volunteers are invited to participate in a cleanup and restoration project focused on preserving this important historical site. Community members may register to volunteer at edinburgarts.com/mlkdayofservice.
Established in 1928 as a burial site for African Americans in Edinburg, Restlawn Cemetery is a significant landmark in the city's history. This Day of Service honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s enduring legacy of service, unity, and community engagement.
Volunteer activities will include clearing debris by raking and removing debris from the cemetery grounds; painting fencing and crosses to help restore the cemetery's appearance; landscaping through mulching and trimming branches and bushes; and installing new metal crosses as markers.
The event will also include a commemorative program highlighting the historical significance of Restlawn Cemetery to Edinburg and the greater South Texas community. City leaders will share remarks emphasizing the importance of service and the impact of collective action in honoring Dr. King's vision.
The City of Edinburg encourages residents and the Rio Grande Valley community to participate in this meaningful day of service. By working together, participants will help preserve a vital piece of history while reflecting the spirit of unity and progress championed by Dr. King.
