More Lies From Johnson & GOP: Leader Schumer Debunks GOP Lies And Deception Amid Trump Shutdown

Washington, D.C. - Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) released the following statement on the healthcare lies spread by Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and Congressional Republicans:

"Let's be perfectly clear: Democrats are fighting to protect Americans' healthcare, we are not trying to give healthcare to undocumented immigrants. Republicans are resorting to lies to distract from the damage and the healthcare crisis their policies have caused for American families," said Leader Schumer. "Republicans can yell until their face turns red but it doesn't change the facts - Democrats are fighting to lower healthcare costs and protect coverage for all Americans. Meanwhile, Republicans have passed legislation that will force millions off their current plans and millions more to go without coverage because of skyrocketing costs. It's past time for Speaker Johnson and Leader Thune to stop the political games and work with Democrats to protect healthcare for Americans."

Today, Johnson cited page 57 section 2141 of the Democratic proposal.

Let's dive into that section:

Section 2141 fully repeals the $1 trillion cut from Medicaid and the ACA and rip health insurance from 15 million people leading to rural hospital and nursing home closures across the country. There is nothing - not a single thing - in the health title that changes health insurance for undocumented immigrants.

What you need to know:

  • Undocumented immigrants are not eligible for Medicaid, Medicare, or ACA tax credits, under current law OR under the Democratic proposal.
  • It has been illegal for decades for undocumented immigrants to get any federal dollars for health insurance
  • The Republican reconciliation bill did not change this law and the Democratic proposal does not change it either.
  • Nothing in the Democratic proposal changes or expands coverage for undocumented immigrants.
  • Due to a federal law called EMTALA, signed by President Reagan, hospitals are required to treat anyone with a medical emergency before checking paperwork for insurance or immigration status.
  • Republicans' so-called "Big Ugly Bill" strips health care from 15 million Americans and drives up costs for millions more to pay for tax cuts for billionaires.
  • The Democratic proposal aims to reverse the Republicans' devastating cuts to Medicaid and extend the ACA tax credits that help eligible Americans afford coverage.
