The City of Tucson Mayor Regina Romero, the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA), Ward 5 Council Member Selina Barajas, and the Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility (DTM), invite you to a groundbreaking ceremony to commemorate the start of the upcoming revitalization project of the 22nd Street Bridge between Tucson Boulevard and Kino Parkway.
Wednesday, February 4, 2026
Noon to 1:30 p.m.
1055 S. Campbell Avenue
The event will include speeches by Mayor Regina Romero, a representative from RTA/PAG, and Ward 5 Council Member Selina Barajas and will be followed by a groundbreaking celebration including local food and refreshments.
"This will keep our supply chain moving, help emergency vehicles reach people faster, and make sure students get to school on time. It's a great example of how smart, targeted investments can solve several problems and improve quality of life in big ways," said Mayor Regina Romero. Everyone from heavy truck drivers to parents looking for easier morning traffic will appreciate these upgrades. I'm looking forward to many years of success for this project."
This improvement project is scheduled to begin at the end of February 2026, with the full closure of the bridge to begin on March 3, 2026.
The 22nd Street project will increase traffic capacity and improve freight access. The existing bridge has a weight restriction of 15 tons due to structural deficiencies and therefore requires heavy vehicles including trucks and buses to use alternate routes. The project will replace the existing weight restricted bridge to eliminate the need for a detour and provide more direct lines of travel for freight and transit. In addition, the number of travel lanes will be increased from two to three lanes in each direction to match the existing roadway section at either end of the project limits as well as include bicycle and pedestrian access on both side of the bridge.
On August 11, 2022, The City of Tucson was awarded $25 million in federal grant funding through the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) program, which invests in communities to modernize roads and critical infrastructure. DTM will use the funds to help construct the 22nd Street Bridge Revitalization Project.
The Regional Transportation Authority, a political subdivision of the state and independently governed, has invested more than $1.4 billion in transportation projects and services to improve mobility, safety, economic vitality and quality of life in the region. The RTA collects a half-cent excise (sales) tax from its special taxing district within Pima County to fund its 20-year regional transportation plan. The plan and tax were approved by voters in May 2006. The 22nd Street Bridge Revitalization Project is part of the RTA plan and is managed by the City of Tucson.
