Explore the Night Sky at Moon Over Monona Terrace

The night sky comes alive on Friday, October 3, 2025, from 7:00 - 10:00 p.m. as Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center and the Madison Astronomical Society (MAS) host Moon Over Monona Terrace on the William T. Evjue Rooftop Gardens.

Guests of all ages are invited to explore the Moon, Saturn, Neptune, and a dazzling array of celestial objects through telescopes provided by MAS members. A Kids' Fun Zone will keep young explorers engaged with hands-on activities including constellation light boxes, galaxy toss, space bingo, and more.

The evening also features a series of engaging presentations:

  • 7:30 & 8:30 p.m. - Observing the Night Sky with the Naked Eye and with Binoculars & Astrophotography with a Cell Phone, presented by Frank Ranallo, UW physicist and professor.
  • 8:00 & 9:00 p.m. - What's Up Tonight?, a guided tour of the current night sky by Dr. Jim Lattis, retired director of UW-Madison's Astronomy Department and UW Space Place.
  • 9:30 p.m. - Astroimaging 102, presented by Rick Wayne, MAS member and astrophotography enthusiast.

Admission is free, but a ticket is required for entry. Tickets are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis, with a maximum of eight tickets per patron. Reserve tickets online at Eventbrite link. In the event of rain or cloud cover, presentations, games, and family learning activities will be moved inside Monona Terrace.
