Leading the way in data privacy and security in digital learning with Kahoot!

At EdTech Week in New York City this week, Kahoot! CEO, Eilert Hanoa, had the opportunity to share Kahoot!'s industry leadership in protecting student data, supporting educators, and earning the trust of schools and districts in the age of AI.

One of the most important challenges we face as an industry is protecting the cyber security and data privacy of educators and students. It has become even more critical as technology rapidly evolves and cyber risks are growing. Equally important is building trust and transparency with students, parents, educators, and school and district leaders.

During the EdTech Week session, AI, Education and Privacy: What EdTech and ChildTech Companies Need to Get Right , led by Common Sense Privacy, Eilert focused on Kahoot!'s privacy by design approach, including:

  • Minimizing data collection by using only what's necessary to deliver engaging learning experiences.
  • Earning the trust of educators through transparency about where and how AI is being used and how data is used (or not).
  • Helping educators understand how AI supports and streamlines their day-to-day workflows, so when they think about AI, they think: AI! not AI?
  • Building products from the ground up focused on compliance, privacy, guardrails, and trust, not as an afterthought.
  • Leading with product development that is focused on serving educators and students and improving learning outcomes.
  • Honoring the teacher's role and the connections they hold with students, which can never be replaced by technology.

At Kahoot!, we're proud to be a trusted provider of safe and secure digital learning. With over 8 million educators worldwide using Kahoot! and 100,000 schools leveraging Clever to deliver engaging and impactful learning for their students, we understand how vital it is to safeguard personal data for teachers and students. This is why we have taken a "privacy by design" approach since day one, making privacy and security central to how we design our product.

What does this look like in practice? Read on for a look into how Kahoot! creates digital learning experiences that are not only engaging but also safe and secure for both teachers and students.

Robust security and data privacy features throughout the platform

When educators and learners access Kahoot!, they can feel confident to explore, create, play, and learn without compromising their personal information. This is because Kahoot! was built for privacy and security from the ground up, and we continue to embed these protections into everything we do, including:

  • Ad-free and private digital learning: On Kahoot!, there are no ads, no data selling, and no third-party ads tracking. Learners can participate in a kahoot session with only a nickname-which can also be randomly generated-allowing students to play and learn on Kahoot! without entering any personal identifiable information.
  • Transparency and strong user controls: Account holders can control their data use. User control is also strengthened by a "no surprises" approach, with transparent communication and enablement for teachers and IT leads. For an overview of our data policies and practices, anyone can access our public Trust Center .
  • Security-first engineering: Privacy and security are key components of Kahoot!'s product development process. To keep our products safe and secure, Kahoot! uses modern encryption, robust testing (including user experience, security, and compliance testing), and rapid patching via frequent releases.
  • Supercharging schools and districts' cyber security with Clever: As part of the Kahoot! Group, Clever delivers secure digital learning and identity in over 100,000 K-12 schools across the U.S. and is expanding internationally.

Developing thoughtful AI tools with full admin control

In the era of rapid AI advancement, it can be easy to overlook security and data privacy concerns in favor of exciting technological innovations. However, it's clear that with this growing complexity in EdTech, earning the trust of educators is more valuable than ever. With Kahoot! AI, teachers (and business users) can see when and how it works: and use it to save time, turn their own PDFs or lesson materials into engaging learning content in seconds, and bring even more energy and creativity into their classrooms or learning environment-supporting teachers and enhancing the learning experience, while still always using minimal user data.

For example, with the Kahoot! AI Generator , educators can instantly generate kahoots, interactive lessons, and other learning sessions, either by simply choosing a topic or using their existing materials, including documents, web pages, videos, Wikipedia articles, or even handwritten notes.

Kahoot! is also using AI to boost safety and moderation, as well as enable smarter content discovery and personalization. For Kahoot!, personalization is about empowering users, not tracking them. We think long term: building trust through innovation that's responsible, transparent and centered on making learning more awesome and engaging. Our AI features are opt-in and explainable , not hidden in the background. Admins can decide which AI features to turn on, with guidance to protect users' personal information. Additionally, through Kahoot!'s partnerships with Apple and Microsoft , educators and learners can generate Kahoot! content with on-device AI , which can reduce latency and improve privacy.
