ATLANTA (December 4, 2025) - Today, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that, in 2026, 55 Superfund sites in the Southeast will undergo a comprehensive and legally required five-year review to ensure remediation efforts continue to protect public health and the environment. The sites are located across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.
"EPA is committed to ensuring that areas remediated under the Superfund program are safe for the surrounding communities and environments. Where appropriate, these lands can be made available for reuse," said Regional Administrator Kevin McOmber. "Critical to this effort is our thorough review of the sites every five years to ensure the remedies we have in place remain protective."
Upon completion, EPA's findings will be posted here.The Superfund sites scheduled for five-year reviews in 2026 are:

Background
The Superfund program, established by Congress in 1980, investigates and cleans up the most complex, uncontrolled or abandoned hazardous waste sites in the country and endeavors to return them to productive use. There are more than 280 Superfund sites across the Southeast.
