Fed $$ Will Help SYR Expand Deicing Pad, Where Airplanes Are Sprayed To Remove Ice, Snow And Frost From Their Wings, To Keep Flying Safe In Cold Weather
Schumer And Gillibrand Fought To Create Airport Infrastructure Grant Program In IIJA To Revitalize Airports And Enhance Airfield Safety
Schumer, Gillibrand: Much-Needed Upgrades Are Taking Off At Syracuse Airport!
U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand today announced they are delivering $18,745,345 in federal funding for Syracuse International Airport (SYR) to expand the existing public use deicing pad, where airplanes are sprayed to remove ice, snow, or frost from their wings. The funding comes from the Airport Infrastructure Grant Program (AIG), which the senators created and funded in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Law.
"This $18 million in federal funding will help Syracuse International Airport make much-needed upgrades to ensure safety in the winter," said Senator Schumer. "I fought hard to secure funding for airport safety projects in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Law because I know how crucial it is to ensure the safety of our airports. With Micron coming to Syracuse and the region experiencing a boom in economic growth, it is more important than ever to ensure our infrastructure can keep up with the needs of businesses and travelers. We are ensuring that Syracuse has the federal support it needs to reach new heights!"
"Syracuse Hancock International Airport is a vital gateway for commerce, tourism, and travel," said Senator Gillibrand. "This project will improve safety and help modernize the airport so that it remains a state-of-the-art, safe facility that everyone who travels through our state deserves. I look forward to seeing the positive impact these improvements will have on the people of Syracuse and will continue fighting for more federal funding to support the critical upgrades that airports across our state urgently need."
"This investment in a new deicing pad at SYR is a major step forward in improving winter reliability, reducing delays, and supporting future growth," said Jason Terreri, Executive Director, Syracuse Regional Airport Authority. "It reflects the shared commitment of our region's leadership to modern, resilient infrastructure, and we thank Senators Schumer, Gillibrand, Rep. Mannion and other our elected officials for their continued support and partnership."
The lawmakers explained that this fund will help expand the existing public use deicing pad, which is where airplanes are sprayed to remove ice, snow, and frost from their wings. In addition, associated equipment has reached the end of its useful life. This grant funds the third phase of the project, which will reconstruct existing space and construct new space.
The AIG program is one of the most widely used federal grants by Central NY airports in order to make critical infrastructure and safety upgrades.
