Speed limit update on Valparaiso Avenue

Speed limit update on Valparaiso Avenue

Published on October 27, 2025

Speed has a major impact on how severe a crash can be. Slowing down helps make our streets safer for everyone. Lowering speed limits is an important part of the City's Vision Zero commitment to end traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2040. A new state law allows cities to reduce speed limits in certain business districts and safety corridors. Following this change, the City began rolling out lower speed limits on select streets, as approved by the City Council in May 2024. As of Oct. 22, and in partnership with the Town of Atherton, the speed limit on Valparaiso Avenue between Cotton Street and El Camino Real has been reduced from 30 mph to 25 mph to improve safety for all road users.
