JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway issued the following statement regarding the quo warranto case seeking to remove St. Louis City Sheriff Alfred Montgomery from office.

"A sheriff who is charged with retaliating against witnesses and confined to his home cannot possibly lead a functioning law-enforcement agency," said Attorney General Hanaway. "The law demands accountability, and the people of St. Louis deserve leadership worthy of their trust. Our Office has asked the Court to remove Sheriff Montgomery to protect the integrity of law enforcement and restore public confidence."

This week, Federal prosecutors filed five new charges against Montgomery: four counts of witness retaliation and one count of witness tampering. This is in addition to an earlier indictment in which Montgomery ordered his deputies to handcuff Acting Justice Center Commissioner Tammy Ross in February. Montgomery will now remain on house arrest under federal monitoring pending further proceedings.
