Medical Imaging Technology graduate plans to become college professor

KOKOMO, Ind. - When Brayden Bockover started college, he briefly considered going into education but decided on healthcare instead.

He enrolled at Indiana University Kokomo with plans to become a physical therapist, but quickly determined that wasn't the right choice for him. Discussion with Melinda Stanley, senior lecturer in healthcare management, led him to radiologic sciences.

"I wanted something that was more hands-on, that did more clinical experiences than book work," said Bockover, from Peru. "That's how I came across the whole world of medical imaging and the modalities associated with it. I've enjoyed all the connections I've made through clinicals, all the hospitals I've been able to work at, and the people I've met in the world of medical imaging technology."

He completed an associate degree in radiologic sciences in 2025, and this month earned his Bachelor of Science in Medical Imaging Technology. His next steps take him full circle back to teaching.

"During my time in the X-ray program, I discovered there may be something there for me in teaching," he said. "Earning this degree is a step toward my bigger goal. I'm going back to get my Master of Public Management this year, with a focus on health sciences, with the bigger picture to become a professor myself."

He's happy to have had the opportunity to earn his degrees close to home, and to have been a 21st Century Scholar to cover tuition for four years.

One of his connections through IU Kokomo's program led to a job as an MRI tech at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. He's made the 60-mile commute from Peru for three 12-hour shifts a week while earning his degree. He plans to continue working there while earning his master's degree.

"Helping people, being a part of their chain of care in imaging is the part of healthcare I fit in the best," he said. "I'm glad to be one cog in the machine that is their entire healthcare from when they are admitted to when they are discharged from the hospital."

Bockover is proud of his accomplishments in earning two degrees so far.

"It means a lot," he said. "I'm the first person in my direct family who has graduated from college. To have this and one more ahead of me, it's been pretty cool. It's an achievement I'm proud I was able to accomplish."
