Reno, Nev. - U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) released the following statement celebrating 250 years of American independence:
"250 years ago, our Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence and decided our nation would be governed by and for the people. Our democratic ideals have led the United States to become a global powerhouse - not just because of our wealth and our strength, but also because of our unwavering belief in freedom and opportunity.
"In this country, a baker originally from Chihuahua, Mexico can bring his family to Las Vegas for a better life, and his granddaughter can become the first woman from Nevada and the first Latina ever to be elected to the United States Senate. That is the American Dream, and that is part of what makes the United States the greatest nation on Earth.
"As Nevadans and Americans across the country come together in celebration, now is the time to remind ourselves that we have much more in common than we think. We share a deep love for this country, we believe in hard work, and we want our families to find success. Those shared values guide me as a representative for all Nevadans, and I hope they continue to guide future generations of Americans through our next 250 years."
