What Changed In Home Depot’s Story

Home Depot (HD) stock currently trades at 21.6 times earnings, compared with 22.9 for the S&P 500. Investors paying that price need a clear understanding of what they are buying, and the retailer's priorities have changed. During a May 20, 2025 call, management detailed a global sourcing strategy aimed at diversifying the supply chain. Today, the focus has shifted. So what does Home Depot's management talk up now?

Home Depot Now Talks Up Faster Delivery

Management now emphasizes fulfillment speed. During the August 18, 2026 call, the company announced the nationwide launch of Express Delivery, offering arrival times of 3 hours or less for tens of thousands of products. Home Depot also reported cutting its U.S. delivery lead times by about 45% over the last 18 months.

That marks a sharp departure from the May 2025 call, where tariffs were the backdrop. Revisiting that topic on an August 19, 2025 call, management noted that over 50% of Home Depot's products were sourced domestically and shielded from tariffs. The company no longer highlights that sourcing effort. It focuses on speed instead.

How Big Is Each Change For Home Depot?

Sales credited to digital platforms grew 11% from a year earlier in the quarter ended August 2, 2026. By comparison, total revenue rose 5.7% over the same period. Management recorded a fifth quarter in a row of double-digit growth for digital sales, tying faster delivery to greater customer engagement.

While tariffs remain in the accounts, they now appear as incoming cash. Home Depot collected $730 million in tariff refunds during the quarter. Management said the $685 million that reached the income statement added about 145 basis points of gross margin, noting that higher costs took back about 60 of them. Gross margin ultimately reached 33.7%, compared with 33.4% a year earlier. Based on management's own figures, the margin would have dropped below the prior-year level without the refunds.

Is Home Depot's New Focus Good News For Holders?

For a holder, the shift provides some reassurance. Management is focusing on elements it can directly control, such as delivery speed. Yet the tariff refunds are what kept gross margin from falling beneath its year-earlier level. On the August 18 call, management reaffirmed its full-year guidance, projecting a gross margin of about 33.1%.

The concern is that other costs will cancel out the margin boost from those refunds. Management said unplanned pressure from fuel, energy and other product input costs will fully offset the tariff benefits over the year. Larger discretionary projects also remain under pressure, management noted on the same call.

Gross margin is the number to watch when Home Depot next reports, on or around November 17, 2026.

Does This Mean You Should Act On HD?

Our purpose is to inform you with unique data so you make the right investment decisions. That said, betting on a single stock is always risky, no matter which direction you choose.

There is a smarter approach. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has returned 105%, beating the benchmark that combines the three major indices - the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking. If that is how you want to invest, the HQ Portfolio is the place to start.
