Today, Congresswoman April McClain Delaney released the following statement:
"We are closely tracking reports regarding movements by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to and in Maryland and are coordinating directly with the Governor, the Attorney General, and our United States Senators to ensure a unified and immediate response.
"I have personally toured ICE's Baltimore holding facility and witnessed firsthand the degrading and inhumane conditions in which individuals are detained. Marylanders do not want another one of these detention warehouses in our communities. We are mobilizing every available tool, including my specific federal legislation, state legislation, litigation, and organized community action to prevent the establishment of an ICE detention facility in Washington County.
"Our experience has shown that ICE has misled or lied or concealed critical information, including quietly announcing a six-day public comment period late on a Friday in the apparent hope that few would respond. That approach is unacceptable. I strongly encourage all residents of Maryland's Sixth District to immediately participate in the public comment process by Thursday, March 5, and make your voices heard.
"As your Congresswoman, I will fight and hold ICE accountable and ensure that the input by our community is received and the objections are known. Working with my colleagues in Team Maryland, we will hold ICE accountable for the rule of law at every turn. Maryland deserves transparency, dignity, and the rule of law - they do not want a rogue force killing and detaining innocent people"
