U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon Honors Louisiana Custodian Donella Wagner as 2026 RISE Award Honoree

Baldwin, Louisiana - Today, U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon named Donella Wagner, Head Custodian at Raintree Elementary School in Baldwin, Louisiana, as the 2026 National Recognizing Inspiring School Employees (RISE) Award honoree. The RISE Award is the nation's highest recognition for education support professions and honors classified school employees-paraprofessionals, bus drivers, custodians, secretaries, and more-whose exceptional service supports student success and strengthens school communities nationwide.

"Education support professionals like Ms. Wagner are the backbone of our schools and local communities," said U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon. "It was a joy to learn about Ms. Wagner's dedication not only to Raintree Elementary School where she greets every student with a smile, but also to the entire Baldwin community. We are very proud to honor and recognize her as the 2026 National RISE Award honoree - it is well deserved!"

"Donella Wagner is the epitome of what it means to be a good leader. For over 27 years she has served in a variety of roles, never seeking praise, only seeking to make an impact on her community," said Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry. "We are grateful for Donella's commitment and service to children, and we are proud to call her Louisiana's own!"

"Support staff are the backbone of our schools and we are so proud of Donella Wagner for shining a light on our state," said Louisiana State Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley. "She's proof of the excellence that exists at every level of Louisiana education." 

This year, the Secretary received 36 eligible nominations from more than 20 participating states and jurisdictions. Each state may nominate up to two of its top classified employees, ensuring the award recognizes the best in their field.

About Donella Wagner

Donella Wagner has dedicated over 27 years to education support, far beyond her custodial duties:

  • Greeting students daily: Volunteers for bus duty, ensuring every child begins their day with a positive, welcoming start.

  • Mentorship: Guides young boys through the Boys 'n Bow Ties program, fostering leadership, honor, and self-confidence.

  • School uniform initiative: Manages the school's uniform closet, providing students with uniforms, shoes, socks, and backpacks, ensuring readiness for learning.

  • Community engagement: Serves seniors through local outreach, delivering companionship, support, and joy to nursing home residents.

  • Leadership & impact: Recognized by colleagues, administrators, parents, and students as the "heart of the school," inspiring excellence, kindness, and a positive school culture.

About the RISE Award

The 2026 award marks the sixth year of the national program. Governors and state officials determined their state-specific process for selecting nominees. Each nominee is peer reviewed, and five finalists were forwarded to the Secretary for final selection.
