"Don't be afraid to apply" - tips from Little Potting Club about applying for funding

11 March 2026

Applying for funding can be daunting. Sometimes the hardest part is the first step.

Vicki Davies from the Little Potting Club in Lancashire, says small organisations should "just go for it." In this blog, she gives advice to small organisations that want to apply for funding.

Little Potting Club received £15,275 from our National Lottery Awards for All England. The funding supports a gardening and nature club for children and their families.

Can you tell us about your project?

The Little Potting Club provides gardening activities for children and their families. But over the years it has grown into much more.

We grow fruit and vegetables in our community garden. We also offer:

  • nature conservation
  • science activities
  • nature crafts

We support families' physical and mental health and get them outside in nature. Activities are free for everyone to take part.

What was the biggest challenge with your application?

Starting it. I was not sure if we would be worthy or important enough to get funding.

We attended a presentation run by a local Funding Officer from The National Lottery Community Fund. It reassured us that we met the criteria and could apply for funding.

The presentation helped us to know what we needed to do and gave us a point of contact. If you can attend a local funding presentation I would recommend going.

How did you take your project from an idea to a written application?

The project was already well established and embedded in the community. I simply wrote what we were passionate about and the good work we deliver at the club. I let the club shine for itself.

It also helped to have a member of staff to contact. Being able to email a person is so valuable.

What top tip would you give to small organisations applying for funding?

My advice for small organisations is to:

  • have a clear goal for your project
  • ask for help if you need it
  • not be afraid to apply

Applications can be daunting but just go for it.

What positive impact has your project had so far?

The project opened so many doors, it has:

  • given families the opportunity to take part for free
  • provided a relaxed learning environment
  • helped the wider community enjoy the flowers we plant in the park and community garden, even if they do not attend the club

I would like to offer a great deal of thanks to the National Lottery for giving small groups funding opportunities like this.
