Signal rebuild at N Rosa Parks Way & Greeley Avenue on track for completion this month

Contractors working for the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) finished paving repairs this week as part of the N Rosa Parks Way & Greeley Avenue Crossing & Signal Project. Crews will install final striping later this month, which will mark the end of major construction.

Travelers should expect periodic delays and flagging for the remaining work. Removal of old markings is tentatively scheduled for September 24th and striping is planned for September 29th. This work is weather depdendant and may change.

Pedestrians should expect detours around the work areas. People driving and biking should travel cautiously through the work zone. Transit users should check TriMet for impacts on nearby bus stops.

Asphalt pavement needs time to cool and cure before final striping can occur. Applying the striping materials too early will reduce their lifespan.

Once complete, this project will reduce future maintenance costs and provide safer, more reliable signal operations.

Modernized signal equipment includes a suite of communications equipment and safety features including retroreflective backplates and larger signal heads for improved visibility, all mounted on durable mast arm poles that have reduced maintenance costs relative to span wire.

Improved signal operations coming soon

Travelers should notice better traffic flow once the final striping is complete. The new striping will allow PBOT signals engineers to take full advantage of the modernized intersection design, including use of new fiber optic communications that allow for coordinated signal timing along N Greeley Avenue.

Transit users on multiple bus lines will soon experience faster and more reliable service thanks to transit signal priority (TSP) that uses the new fiber optic infrastructure. PBOT will implement the TSP this fall in partnership with TriMet.

The new striping will allow pedestrians to use the new crosswalk on the west leg of the intersection, which was previously missing due to deficient signals infrastructure.

Other project updates and upgrades include:

• A dedicated left-turn lane from southbound N Greeley Avenue to eastbound Rosa Parks Way
• Curb ramps rebuilt to meet modern accessibility standards
• Protected left-turn signals from N Rosa Parks Way to Greeley Avenue
• Driveway closure on the northeast corner for improved safety
• Added concrete on southeast corner to provide an accessible bus stop
• Extended pavement repair on northbound N Greeley Avenue approaching Rosa Parks Way to address deep rutting
