The Stafford County Board of Supervisors adopted an Emergency Ordinance, EO25-01, on October 21, 2025, to extend zero penalties and interest through December 20, 2025, on personal property tax. This effort was prompted by the financial uncertainty surrounding the delayed adoption of the federal budget and its potential impact on the residents of Stafford County. This will allow taxpayers more time to pay their Personal Property tax bills.
There is no State Code authority for the Board to waive penalties and interest, but the Board can set the amount for penalties and interest to $0 and 0%. Virginia Code sets a maximum amount for penalties and interest, but no minimum. The changes cannot be applied retroactively. State Code allows an emergency ordinance to delay the penalties and interest for up to 60 days. The Board can adopt a new emergency ordinance at a later meeting to further extend the time for residents to pay without penalty and interest.
Real Estate Tax bills are due December 5 and are not affected by the Emergency Ordinance.
Residents will receive their bills via postal mail or email notification. The bills will be made available on the Stafford County website at www.staffordcountyva.gov/epay beginning November 5, 2025. If you do not receive a statement by November 15, 2025, or have payment questions, please contact the Treasurer's Office at (540) 658-8700.

You may pay online by credit card or e-check at www.staffordcountyva.gov/epay, by phone at 540-608-2142, in person at the Treasurer's Office, by mail, or via the after-hours drop box located at the front of the entrance to the George L.
