Cobb EMC Celebrates Launch of SolarShare Community Solar Project

October 14, 2026

Yesterday Cobb EMC celebrated the official ribbon cutting of SolarShare, its new community solar project in Cherokee County. The 1-megawatt facility is now operational and generating local renewable energy, providing members with a new way to participate in solar energy without installing rooftop panels on their homes.

Located adjacent to Interstate 75, the project is one of only a few interstate solar projects in the United States and just the second in Georgia. Developed in coordination with the Georgia Department of Transportation, the facility was made possible through collaboration with project partner Gas South and installation partner Colite Technologies.

SolarShare expands access to solar energy for eligible Cobb EMC members who may not be able to install rooftop panels or who prefer a simpler alternative. Through the program, members can subscribe to solar blocks from the shared facility and receive monthly bill credits based on the energy produced.

"This project demonstrates how innovation and collaboration can create practical energy solutions for our members," said Tim Jarrell, Executive Vice President of Power Supply and Emerging Technologies at Cobb EMC. "SolarShare gives members an affordable way to support local solar generation while helping us build a more diverse energy future for the communities we serve."

The facility generates electricity locally in Cherokee County and feeds that energy directly into Cobb EMC's electric system. By allowing more members to participate in solar generation, SolarShare supports environmental stewardship while keeping the benefits of renewable energy within the local community.

Enrollment in SolarShare is now open. Members may purchase up to five solar blocks, with each block representing three solar panels in the shared facility.
